Hardware and software??

Hello,
As we r seeing OSI or IP reference model, how those layers performs its function fastly and whether those functions are implemented in hardware or through software???

Re: Hardware and software??

Only the physical layer in each of the models provides hardware connections.Various types of connectors such as RJ45,BNC etc. have their interface at the physical layer that means to connect two devices. The physical layer is always medium dependant, means it is designed in a way that it is compatible with the medium it is supposed to be connected in eg. optical, electrical etc.

All the other layers are logically connected, they do not have a physical connection.the interfaces between all the other layers are always the same because they are medium independant.

For different types of architectures,it is always the physical layer which changes and sometimes the MAC layer(sub layer of Data link Layer).Rest all the layers always remain the same.

so how to make this architecture implemented in the real world but not in the simulation phase?
