This one works I made it some time ago, you can feed it with 7 to 12VDC
jp1 controls the baud on = 4800, off (default) = 9600,
jp2 controls the number of bits on = 9, off (default) = 8
jp3 connect the 120 ohms resistor to the 485 line.
The microcontroller avoid the ds3696 transceiver to read data when the max232
is reading data from the 232 port, when 232 ends another circuit connected
to the 485 line can send data.
Hope this hepls.

This one was made some time ago - opto isolated, auto direction switching.
Inputs TTL-compatible

This is exactly the design which makes our "RS485 Convertor" product Completely Auto-Sensing and Self-Adjusting (Baud rates and Data Formats) as a bus converter.
Here is one picture of the CVT-485 product:

Hi.
Attached PDF file is RS-232 to RS-485/422 Converter schematic.
It can support RS-422 and RS-485 to change only two jumppers.
And it used general devices.
75176 can be replaced max485, 65LBC184 etc.
