A GSM module is... err... a GSM module just like a phone, and of course is needs a SIM (what GSM does not?!). With today's GSM modules you can do anything a phone can do + use it for data transfer etc. This area is called M2M - Machine 2 (to) Machine communications. Some popular module makers are Motorola, Siemens and Nokia. There are of course many more. Some come in embedded OEM module types while others are in an external case.

Google, and also see here:

Yes, you have to and all costs would be same like mobile phone.
What do you mean with "use GSM Module in cell phone" as GSM module itself can act as a mobile phone. You can interface GSM module with external microcontrollers such as Renesas, AVR, 8051,PIC. Also you could add GPS module, for example, to your GSM module. Of course, it can be connected with another GSM phone as you meant, but it totally depends on what are you designing..... Very Happy

Hopefully it can help.

of course you can, you have to add data cable in order to control your nokia 1100. You use external microcontroler or not?

the problem of using 1100 is that you must have its AT+C.
