Post13 Dec 2006 7:35   What is SOC

Hi

Can anybody explain me what is SOC and what it contains?

Does SOC contains analog components/devices also?

SOC is system on chip, entire computer placed on a single ic is example of soc,

A system stands for everything you can think for except an inductor. e.g ARM , DSP processor etc.

SOC = System-On-Chip.

Not necessary analog circuits are included. Sometimes chips containing digital+memory also called SOC chips.

SOC= System On Chip; a complete system in one chip, regardless analog or digital, however, complete system often has both digital & analog circuits,

Integrating the large system on a single chip.
The system includes CPU, Memory, I/O, Bus, Functional Blocks,...

can you give some example in which application SOC is implemented. not all system can be built in single chip right? Thanks

Examples of applications are medical devices, low data rate RF and smart sensors. These are usually Mixed Signal types. All of these applications are usually powered by a some sort of microprocessor and therefore make good candidates for reaching a higher level of integration, a SoC.

SOC -> system on Chip

Yeah SOC does contain some of analog ckts like PLL !!

It is vry challenging to work in this domain

soc means system on chip. more exactly means, functional blocks like: linear reg, switching reg, adc,...vhdl etc are integrated inside one chip for a more inteligent control.

SOC can contain most of the peripherals inside the chip itself. But still there are a few blocks like voltage regulators which have to be connected outside... (Simply because the heat dissipated is too much and also accompanying caps are huge). Also a few things like relays are seldom incorporated inside a soc as the switching causes lot of power supply bounces.
Many a time, firmware support is needed for the soc to work as a system.

Summary: Although SOC stands for System on Chip, it need not and usually does not constitute an entire system.
