Need Advice About Infrared Sensor.

I want to build an active Infrared Sensor, which should detect the presence of the object at the distance of 4 meters.
I had an experience doing such sensors with one Infrared Diode and one receiver TSOP1738. It uses a reflection from the object (when the object is in front of the emitter the receiver gets the signal and I detect it). But It worked good on the distance not more than 1.2 meters.
But there I met such problem, that when I increase the power of emitting diode, the receiver starts detect the signal even if nobody is in front of it.
So I am asking for any good advice, how to make such detector for bigger distance. Even 3 meters will be ok.

I really need your help. Thank you.

Need Advice About Infrared Sensor.

you should start to think about some other way of meassurring distances... In my openion the ranges ower 1.5 meters are not meassurable this way. Maybe if you use som IR lamp, or you should try something more efective, something that from can be some data retrieved (sonar)

Hi

Try to use ultrasonic emmitter and receiver.

also in your case you may try change the pull up resistor used with your receiver

Re: Need Advice About Infrared Sensor.

Thank you for your answers.

About Ultrasonic: I had an experience working with them. My knowledge tells me that for such distance they will have the size of about 65 mm. Or may be I am wrong.

To zememerack: What IrLamp you can recommend, which does not have very big size. If I use more than one IRLEd will it be the same?

Also, did anybody try use lenses in front of the receiver? If yes, what lenses and how they improve everything?
What will be If instead of one IRLEd I will use more?

What other IR-active method (or other receiver ICs) you can recommend me to use for this?
Did anybody considered IR-laser-diodes? I have never used them, so do not know anything about them.
