The one I use.
Racal Redac was the bomb. PDP-11 cpu.
Green screen.
Multilayers. woo hooo; solid trace, dashed, dotted, dash-dot traces.
Hand generated net-list.
Nothing beats manual layout - with tape.

Hi,
The list will be endless, unless you are more specific, what kinda design you will be doing and ur future designs.
Here are the CAD Tools in order of popularity (Number of Seats installed) and design complexity -
Mentor Expedition
Cadence Allegro
Zuken CR5000
Mentor Board Station
Mentor PADS Layout
@ltium Designer
Zuken CADSTAR
@ltium P-CAD
OrCAD Layout
Electronics Workbench Ultiboard
Intercept Pantheon
Pulsonix
CADInt
Eagle

The "Bullshit list" is what I call it.
This list shows the most popular, meaning:
Some idiot pencil pusher/manager makes the decision to buy a particluar
system based on how many free lunches he gets from the sales person.
This idiot manager will never use the system.

| when one start to learning and use a cad-cam pcb it's difficult to change it with another cad because ther's low compatibility of source files with other cad, the result is that in a life of pcb-designer there is space only for 2-5 cad pcb, and when start with a product-line go on with them.

| For the RF pcb required by me, i found sprint layout 5 to be the best. Small & no learning.

PADS here, at least for complex designs.
A guy I work with likes to use Eagle for little projects he tinkers with (not meant to be diminutive, I haven't used it).
Depends on your needs... and your budget!

Hello,
It depends on what type of applications you want to release in a PCB
is full Digital or Mixed signal or RF circuit are their in your design?
What is the budget?
Who is going to use is a new layout engineer or experienced engg.?
what frequency? do you do complete module design ?
Any other cad or simulation tools interface etc?
Do you need circuit co-simulation, electromagnetic simulation or SI analysis on the PCB...etc...
based on above factots you have
1. Cadence- Allegro, APD, OrCAD
2. Mentor graphics-Boardstation, PADS, PowerPCB,
3. Zuken-CADStar, Visula,
4. AutoCAD
5. AWR Microwave Office,
6. Protel
7. Intercept Pantheon

| As my experience, for a starter, Protel is much easier. for a mass production products and design with a big team, mentor expedition is the best. for schematic, OrCAD capture is the most friendly one, the problem is transfer one schematic from OrCAD to mentor always not so nice. for similuation, multisime is very good for simple use, when the requirement higher, PSpice is very good.

Expedition is schematic driven. If part or net is not on the schematic, it won't be on the board. As I am worked in pads it would take time to play with this expedition.

Zuken is for sure the best.
It has only a small problem: THE PRICE.
If someone can afford the expense, will have a very good product.

| Does anyone know if Mentor continues the development of Expedition. It seems that since they bought Veribest they are stopping the development. In their web it is not possible to see if they have release for examplo a new version the las two years.
