Carrer in VLSI

Hello!!! I am final year B.E. student recruited by IBM. I am interested in building a carrer in VLSI. Presently, at academics we only have a subject of VLSI. So, awareness regarding the subject is pretty low in my case. Still I am interested to build a career. I would like to know future job oppurtunities, salaries, etc...

Also, I would like to know what should be action plan? Whether I should go with IBM or should I have my PG? I am not able to get through. Please help what exactly should be action plan presently. I have also not prepared for any presentation in any of the conferences rather have only attended them.

Please help!!!

Re: Carrer in VLSI

Hello agrawal,

It depends on your interst basically. If u are really interested in pursuing a career in vlsi then u better do a major in VLSI in ur PG. It would be hard for anyone to staigh away get into a job without knowing the basics.

For VLSi analog and mixed signal is a field to look for in the future.

What is ur major in BE

Thanks

Re: Carrer in VLSI

Well as an electronics engineer u might be having good knowledge of the electronic devices. VLSI basically is in two different fields Analog and digital.

To start with u choose your interest first in which field u want to go.

If u opt for Digital designing then concentrate on digital system designing and try to learn some hardware description language like VHDL or Verilog.

If u opt for analog u should be very strong in the device physics. Eventhough we have analog behavioral modelling languages like verilog AMS, Verilog A, it would be complicated for anyone as a starter. Get an idea of spice modelling as well.

If u want to get into a backend design u can learn about layout techniques, Static timing analysis, clock tree synthesis.

For your info, Front end is the part before the synthesis where as backend is after synthesis where these layouts and physical designs are done.

Dont try to get into everything choose any one of them once u get an idea of what they are?

Thanks
