well viruses, worms don;t really come under attacks ...
attacks mean something like denial of service attacks .. taking control of your computer and in turn trying to bring down the network with help of computers controlled .. and these can run into thousands !! there are various methods of carrying out denial of service attacks .. SYN flooding, SQL injection, buffer overflows, etc. etc. basically, all you aim to do is overload the target with too many requests which the network cannot handle !! such attacks don't really involve damage to the compromised (zombie) computers but collectively bring down services of a target such as say amazon.com .. halting its services and operations ...
viruses and worms, on the other hand, damage the infected computer as well as spread around to other computers using the host computer ! some viruses might also install trapdoors which allow access of ur computers and/or send out information to some desired person ... viruses might bring down a network by damaging files / information required for proper operation ..
hope i cleared the difference between viruses, worms, etc and active network attacks .. u can always wiki it ...
