Directly you cannot;

you need an interface; by using a RTL or other interface chip

a non pic (LPC2124 ARM7TDMI-S) example is

You can also use a RS232 to ETHERNET module to connect 16F877 to LAN.

Microchip have their own solution now, the ENC28J60. Looks easy enough to use, just add the magnetics and a few passive components. Don't know if you'll fit much code to drive it into an 877 though. You might just be able to do UDP. The same problem might exist for any smaller PIC.

I have tried building the PICNIC using an old 16-bit LAN card operates in 8-bit mode.

I can get two webpages, one with text and one with a small image, served by the PIC 16F877. Not much real usage but very interesting to know it can be done. One will need a NE2000 compatible LAN card. All info and source codes are provided.
