try the new william stallings book .. cryptography and network security ... u will get the ebook easily ...

also, u can try the book by Wade Trappe ... look it up in your library ... pretty basic book with lucid language ... took an advanced course under that guy ... not a bad book to start with ... starts right from roman ciphers, one of the most basic ones....

we used C++ but java is fairly common these days ...
theres a library for c++ called crypto++ ... opensource ... pretty neat to use ...
