Hi,
I'm interested in computer networking and planning to sit for the CISCO certificate exam, CCNA.
Wish to discuss with all of you about these certificates, CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE.
Anyone has opinion or suggestions, post your message here.
Anyway, is CCNA useful and important if working as a network engineer?
Whoever in Malaysia has the info about the exam location and fee, please leave me a message. I prefer KL area.

CCNA is a "plus" requirement for Networks & Communications Engineers nowadays (speciallay in the Arabian Gulf & Middle East)
I'm gonna take it this summer,,
Highly recommended by many experts in the field.........
Best of Luck..

| I also plan to take it next few months. I plan to study myself then sit for the exam, as the course fee is very expensive. Do you have any good resources to prepare for this exam?

| I think can self studied, but it's quite difficult as the exam has a part we need to configure Cisco routers. If anyone has the experience of taking CCNA exam, please share your experience here. What types of questions will be asked in CCNA.

| I am doing course in CCNA. It requires lab with cisco routers so that u can practise afterwords on netsim. Hence u should take up course in some institute where latest routers are present.

Can I get the netsim from the internet? Who can provide me the link? I wish to study by self, as the fees to attent the course is really quite high (in Malaysia).
Whoever has experience in this, please give some suggestions. I guess there're somebody can pass the exam without attending course, learn to configure the router or switch by self.

| U can do by own. But i think its bit difficult. Since u need to physically perform connections. It will be better form job prospective. Try to attend demo lecture regarding routers.

It's not impossible to get a CCNA certificate with self-study,for example I was attending a course but then decided to leave because you can find many materials on the web even free router simulators ,also CCNA is an entry level exam for Network eng. and contains many default questions.
the key point is "you are in charge"

| I am a college professor and teach the CCNA classes. Cisco CCNA and the Microsoft MCSE is a powerful combination. Cisco tests you on what you really know. The test includes not only theory questions but also 'exhibit' ones. The 'exhibit' questions hyperlink you to another page that is usually a screen-shot of some configuration that you need to analyze and respond to. Without actual hands-on practice, these will be difficult to pass.

I don't know about free. But I'm sure they are out there.
I use the one from Cisco Press.
'Boson' now supplies the simulator for Cisco.

CCNA Exam Prep 2 (Exam 640-801)
David Minutella, Heather Stevenson, Jeremy Cioara
Publisher: Que
ISBN: 0789735199
Copyright @ 2005
Book Description
The CCNA Exam Prep 2 (Exam Cram 640-801) is an in-depth training guide for the Cisco Certified Network Associate certification. This book not only incorporates the latest changes to the exam since its release in 2003, it also covers all the exam objectives and gives the you a thorough understanding of each testable concept in addition to real-world practicality for configuring a wide range of Cisco devices. Sub-netting concepts are emphasized because this has historically been one of the most difficult roadblocks for self-studying CCNA candidates.
The book begins with an objectives quick reference and includes chapter summaries with a list of key terms, exercises, review questions, and an exam on chapter content with detailed answers. It then goes on to include notes, tips, cautions, and exam alerts to help you focus on important issues. There is also troubleshooting explanations and a multimedia demonstration on the CD of all configurations and troubleshooting methods mentioned in the book to help the reader gain a real-time understanding of the steps involved. Prepare for this exam with the CCNA Exam Prep 2, the complete certification solution for the CCNA exam!

Its better to self-study rather than joining a course to attend CCNA exam. You will get indepth knowledge only thro self study.
Start with the following books for basic understanding of networking.
1) Data communication networking by Ferozan
2) TCP/IP by Dougles E. Comer. ( Just first 6 chapters are enough)
Then go through anyone of the following study materials
1) CCNA preparation guide by Wendell Odom - Cisco Press Publication (recommended)
2) CCNA guide by Todd lamelle - Sybex Publication - (If your intension is to just pass the CCNA exam rather than getting good knowledge - read this book alone)
Go through the Testking materials for atleast 10 days before writing the exam.
EXAM DATE : There is no specified date for the exam. If you feel confident enough to fix it , just go to the Prometric Test center and register a date for the exam according to your convenience. In India it costs around 7000 Rs ( during the year 2005 , I am not sure abt the fee now).
FOR MTECHs :CCNA is just an introduction to networks. IT is useful for network protocol stack developers. It is not that essential for MTECHs in communication engineering. If u have CCNA , then it may help u in your work sometimes. For MTECHs in communication options are many. You may get into algorithm development , communication architecture implementation, coding theory . In these cases Having CCNA won't count.

Very nice contribution, dear mathuranathan. Did you obtain your CCNA by self-studying?
I hear that CCNP exam cannot be self-studied. How true is that?

Yes. I myself studied for 2 months and obtained CCNA. I have not attended any institutes for that. Even for CCNP you dont need to go to institutes. just patience and hard work will do. In institutes they will concentrate on how to fix the exam (by giving many question papers to solve) rather than concentrating on real knowledge. Even you can get those question papers for your practice from the internet. So my opinion is "dont waste money by going to institutes. Just dedicate time and effort".
Thanks and sorry for the late reply
