can we know, which field of communications are you looking for. For basic communications, i feel simon haykins book, communications system 4th edition is good. however, beginners might have a little difficulty in understanding.
a lot of equations to in the book.

As per your requirment, like u said a lot of equations, for u Proakis is THE BEST book.But if u r in this for the first time , then u will require BP Lathi's Digital Communication then it would be easy to go through Proakis.

I think the best book is Communication Systems by Carlson. Sklar is also a good book but it is not a basic communication book in the sense that it deals mainly with Digital Comm not Analog Comm which is a must to understand for beginners.

I you are a beginner, I recommend; Advanced Electronic Communication Systems
by Wayne Tomasi, and Communications Systems by Proakis

For Basic, the book which more detail with mathematic expression is NIIT. Basic of Electronic Communications Prentice-Hall of India. 2004.
