I too am a beginner like you in moving message displays. I started a topic "A problem
with dot matrix displays" in this board at:

in it I have posted my 8051 assembly code and my schematic diagram in a file
'Dot Matrix.rar' ,download it and see if it is of any help to you.
Also the topic contains some interesting discussion about the brightness of LEDs in the dot matrix display. Please check it out. I hope it is useful.
