ukrainian transformer core steel

What can be used for a transformer core? I think a piece of steel with a large area is what I need. The example I have seen requires a large area, not just length. Do I have to find a steel shop?

Re: transformer core

Books. Google. Look at some old transformers. Iron transformer cores have to be made of laminations not one big bit of metal.

For higher frequncys the core can be ferrite.

Re: transformer core

You cannot simply use a hunk of metal as transformer core.
For AC line frequency you need laminations, which are made of a special steel, to reduce losses. The core is made of laminates in order to reduce eddy-current losses.

Re: transformer core

Actually, even if the core is laminated the eddy currents are high ( high joule
losses). For transformer is used a iron laminated core alloy which contains
a semiconductor type of material as the the one used in pnp or npn transistor.
