Doing DSP with a MAC

Doing DSP with a MAC

I think i will be buying a mini mac .I want to do dsp systems but instead of buying specialized C6000 architectures i have been looking for a cheap replacement .And i found it on the new mini mac .this $450 machine has a G4 (powerPC) cpu and by looking at this bechmarks numbers (http://www.techonline.com/community/ed_resource/feature_article/14663) ,It should perform pretty good !

With this machine i can have a lot of resources for the same price . up to 1 gig of ram hard drive, cdrom ,graphics .USB2 etc ,etc And all that i na very reliable os like linux .
On top , the development tools are free like the VSIPL DSP libraries. FFtw and others , By the way ffts are faster on the PowerPC than in the C6711 !

One more thing .XILINX's virtex II also use PowerPc ,so maybe once the algorithms are tuned on the mac ,they can be embedded and accelerated in XILINXs parts ?

The other great gain is that SCILAB (free MATLAB CLONE)is ported to the mac :http://cermics.enpc.fr/~jpc/scilab/site/MacOSX/MacOSX/index.htm

so it can facilitate DSP enviroments

Have you compare PowerPC with C6000?

The G4 is much more powerful than the tiny PPC inside the Virtex2P.
The FPGA version has no floating point, no AltiVec, slower clock rate, etc.

Hi Zhaoyimiao .the comparaison between G4 and C6000 can be found here

Something is confusing. The news release from Apple claimed that their switching to Intel processors would increase the speed of program execution. The bar graphs above indicate that switching would halve the speed.

If you take a closer look at the graphs you will see the comparation is with P3 600Mhz. I have the feeling they want be using those in their new Pc's. Smile
