Post11 Mar 2005 8:13   What to do ?

Hi All,

I am Tahar graduated from a french school of engineering in electrical engineering and electronics. ( MSEEE).

My first master thesis was related to fault tolerance applied to FIR filter (programmed in VHDL) and writtent a paper about it , I ve done it in a swedish university and I am pursuing my studies in System on CHip design Master in the same (top) swedish university.

1) preliminary question:

It is a really helpful to have an IEEE paper regarding job opening ?

As I told I am pursuing in system on Chip design, I realized many things :

- low power analog and mixed signal design IC, and RF electronics are valuable fields. ( I ve taken both course in this second master). A practical experience (internship, thesis, project ...) is may be required to "sell" this knowledge to recruiters though.

- Engineer in these fields are somewhat mere, resulting in a better salary with respect to digital IC design engineers ( there are many)

- Combining an experience in digital electronics (as I ve done in my first master thesis) and an experience in these field could be not a negligeable plus.

- I become old, 26 in march, maybe i am too old for recruiters if I start applying for an entry level job ( the only kind of job I could apply actually)

I have many possibilities, which of the following choice appears u to be the best ?

1 - finishing in May 2005 and make use of my first master thesis as the master thesis of the second master (My examinator was ok for that) and start searching for jobs.

2 - getting 3 month rest ( I really need, I started the second master just at the end of the first ), and start of in internship of three month typically in a compagny in germany in one or both field ( RF, mixed)

3 - Getting one month rest and may be doing a longer internship.

If I dont find any internship in companies should I take solution 1 ?

Thank you in advance for your comments, suggestions and corrections.

Have a nice day !

Hi All,

24 people have seen this post so far and not a piece of answer, or comments ? Is anything that I should clarify on my way of exposing the issue ?

Thanks in advance.

If u really need a break then take the second option. Extended your studies should't be that a big problem. If u on the other hand struggle to be finish as soon as possible while u really need a break, your work would not be as good. So i go for option 2 or 3.

Good Luck!!

Hi Tarah,

To answer your first question, yes it really counts if your master thesis is an IEEE paper. It gives your assertion another prestige.

I think you are right about digital and analog designers. RF engineers are few and they are paid more but their field is also more difficult.
On the other hand having knowledge in both digital and analog design gives you an advantage. If I am not mistaken your second master teaches both fields. Other masters also include embedded software and system design. SystemOnChip is a vast area and includes digital, analog and software. After the master you choose the field you want to work but having an overall knowledge gives you a great advantage. If you look at the job adverts you will see what I mean. And you are not old enough for graduate job openings. If you feel uncomfortable there is no need to include your age in your CV.
Now about your possibilitites:
In my opinion don't use your first master thesis for the second master. From my experience in job interviews the master thesis counts more than the master itself. If you want to enter the field of RF and mixed signal design do a thesis in that area.
I once lost a job because another person that we had done the same master had done a thesis that was exactly what they wanted (he had no working experience). Mine was close enough and I had working experience but they chose the other person. By this exaple I want to point you how important is the final master thesis.
If you can do your thesis in a company as you said then don't think about GO!! Industrial thesis is even better and harder to find. But if you can't find an internship then my opinion is do an academic thesis in the field you want but don't go for option one.
If you want to take a break it is understadable. If your university allows it and if you find an internship that also agree it's fine.
But again my opinion is don't let a lot of time to pass without doing anything. That means that if I were you I would go for option 3.
I wish you the best of luck and to achieve what you always wanted to do. You have the qualifications so don't hasitate!!
