Hello.

I want to find a book about computer architecture, the basics first and
then the advanced courses.

Can anyone suggest something?

I know that most courses are using Patterson's book, but many people
are saying that it requires some knowledge before going to this book.

That is true

Going directly to Patterson's book is not a good idea. It assumes that you have some basic computer architecture knowledge. We are talking about the " Computer Architecture a Quantitative Approach" here.

You can start with Patterson's "Computer Architect hardware software interface" or you can use William Stallings or Tanenbaum's acomputer architecture books.

I think that Mano's book "Computer Systems Organization and Architecture " is a very simple, it had all the basics needed in computer architecture

OK, thanks for the advices.

I think I'll go for these two books,

1) Computer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interface:
Student Edition.
2) Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach.

from the same authors.

amazon.co.uk gives these two books for £69.94 ~= 135 $ but both books are
in paperback, amazon.com gives these two for 179$ but in hardcover.

I know the difference in paperback and hardcover, but does this excuse
allmost 45 $ in price?

Is there something else that I don't know?

I have seen both, the paperback and the hardcover editions of both the books, and there is absolutely no difference.

Even I think, "Computer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interface" is a really good 1 to start with.

Check the archives of this forum and you can get the ebook for the Computer Architecture - A quantitative approch.

Thanks for the advices.

The problem is that I cannot define what is the best book for me.

Everyone thinks that the book he has red is better.

What can I do? There is not a clear solution here.

Shall I just close my eyes and leave myself to luck???

any book of the above books will be a good choise for you to go.... u need to get any one of these and start reading, all the books have the same concept.

I have kinda glansed thr' all of the books metioned above (and I have all of them). Also I know many ppl who have studied all these books. According to them and even I, the book by Shen and Lipasti is the best 1 ! It is well organized and explains all concepts in a way so that even a beginner can understand. And last but not least, being most recent book, it also has some new concepts which others dont.

The Computer Architecture a quantitive approach by Patterson and Hennessy which has uploaded few month ago by pourfardm is good for surveying about the papers and new methods in computer architecture in recent years.

But moriss mano book is a very simple book for basic items.
I have read cache part in patterson but i did not understand some parts until i read moriss mano book.
