is it reliable implementing realtime clock (seconds, minutes, hour) using timers?
how do we go about calculating & fixing the error (say evey 3 day have to adjust by some seconds..)?

I dunno how far the timers can be accurate but i know there is a IC still inproduction from philips PCF8583 that is a real time clock with I2C communications, that u can implement on Pic easy
