Can I tweak my old dc current measuring dmm, so that it can also measure ac current as well.

The answer is an absolute yes but complexity to do it is variable. You need to tweak circuit etc.

Here is another approach, perhaps simpler...
If your DMM can measure AC volts, then buy or build a current shunt resistor, something like the 34330A:

Hello

You might use AD636 RMS to dc converter, so as to be able to measure true values of AC currents. Samples are also availabe, so it is worth a try.
